3 Ways to Stay Mindful of Your Body When Practicing Burlesque…

By August 15, 2018 No Comments

If you’re a burlesque dancer, then you will know all too well the aches and pains that come with performing. On the surface, a burlesque performer’s moves may look seamless, but behind the scenes there has been a whole lot of body preparation and care that has gone into the routine so that it looks polished. Without this kind of bodily self-care, you’d likely find us curled up on the sofa, feeling sorry for our aching muscles and eating our way through a tub of Ben & Jerry’s. To avoid that (ice cream can obviously be consumed at any time), here are our 3 Ways to Stay Mindful of Your Body When Practicing Burlesque…

Always warm up & down…

Burlesque is a form of dance; therefore, you must always follow the standard warm up/warm down rules that dancing requires, so that you remain healthy and strong. For some, this may mean a series of repeated movements (jumping jacks/burpies), for others this may be dancing wildly to a random song but at LYB, the warm up is a routine itself. Focusing on stretching, moving and getting your heart-rate going, a warm up prepares you for whatever it is you have planned. It is also important to warm down as you may cause your body some harm if you go from moving, shimmying and jigging about to sitting on the sofa.

Remember to rest…

Just like regular exercise and dance, burlesque can wear you out. Burlesque is largely about control – controlled movements at a controlled pace and you’d be surprised by how much we rely on our muscles for this. A shimmy does not just consist of shimmying your headlamps with wild abandonment, it is instead a controlled shoulder hit from side to side. A figure of eight with your hips, is not just swaying your hips, you are controlling the movement from your core. If done properly, burlesque can almost seem like a workout which is why it’s important to take time to rest your weary body between practices, otherwise you may find yourself feeling less-than-fabulous and unable to perform!

Listen to your body…

At LYB, we pride ourselves on being accessible to everyone – no matter their body shape, size or ability. Which is why if a move isn’t doable for you, you are ‘too fabulous for that move’ and we’ll find something else that works instead! At the same time, it’s your responsibility to know your body’s limits. If you’ve had a hip replacement, for example, it’s probably not a good idea to hoick your leg up onto a chair… burlesque calls for you to look after yourself, just as we’ll take care of you too.
